VegasDaze Guru Picks for Favorite Attractions

Written by Tiffany Milligan – A Vegas Local

There are so many places to visit in Las Vegas that being overwhelmed is an understatement, at best, when trying to decide what to do in the limited time you have. It’s a lot like being a kid on Halloween and trying to decide which neighborhood you’re going to hit that will yield the best lot of goodies with the least amount of effort! (We always hit the neighborhood that gave out full-size candy bars and cold, hard cash $$$!) The VegasDaze staff has family and friends visiting all the time, so it’s always fun to see what they think are the best things to do in Las Vegas! I’d have to say, the list covered my favorites as well…minus the Thunder from Down Under ;) show!

Downtown Canopy Show
“What are all of these people doing? It’s dark out here; there’s a lot going on INSIDE the casinos, so WHY are they all standing here, in the middle of the street?!” Then a blast of music rocks the crowd and the whole street lights up! All heads turn skyward, towards the 90 foot high canopy above, as it displays a themed light show that runs the ENTIRE street! It’s fun, the crowd is friendly, and it’s FREE! It’s one of the best things to do in Las Vegas! While on Fremont Street, VegasDaze guru, Jeff Williams, enjoys seeking out the street performers (I use the term “performers” loosely…like looser than a thrift store turtleneck), Hello Kitty and Dirty Fat Spiderman! Just kidding! We all run when we see these “characters”!

Lake Las Vegas
Just 25 minutes from the Strip, a pristine 320 acre lake awaits you! Lake Las Vegas offers breathtaking views of a Mediterranean inspired wonderland. Hop on a rented boat at the marina and enjoy the calm, blue waters with your family and friends. All of the VegasDaze gurus agree, this is one of the best things to do in Las Vegas!

Pinball Hall of Fame
Interior picture of a row of pinball machines at the Pinball Hall of Fame.Pinball is a popular pastime of the VegasDaze gurus. Ok, that might not be completely accurate ;) BUT the Pinball Hall of Fame is definitely one of the best things to do in Las Vegas when company comes to visit! Grab that jar of quarters you’ve collected and head on down to this warehouse that is home to LOTS of pinball machines of times forgotten…you know, the “good ole days”! It takes you back to those simpler times, BEFORE games required a remote with 20 buttons, BEFORE you strapped on a headset and talked to your buddies in other countries while playing Call of Duty, and possibly BEFORE you were born!

Rated 5/5 stars on nearly every “customer rating” site out there, the Bellagio Fountains is another VegasDaze guru pick of the best things to do in Las Vegas. Playful and flirty, the fountains’ dancing water, fantasy invoking lights, and whimsical music are perfectly married, creating a breathtaking scene. The expansive pond of twirling and spinning fountains tantalizes your senses every 15 to 30 minutes, depending on the day and time! The dancing water blasts into the air, in perfect rhythm with the classical, opera, and show tunes that have been tastefully coordinated with the fountain’s “dance”.

Since you’re already at the Bellagio, don’t pass up the opportunity to see the botanical gardens; they boast a phenomenal colorful display of flowers, bridges, and seasonal objects. Over 120 employees create whimsical scenes in this glass enclosure, which takes up over 13,000 square feet of the Bellagio, just past its main lobby. Check out the floral arrangements in the lobby as you head to the gardens…they’re fit for a palace!

The Top of the Stratosphere
Getting on the elevator and ascending the 1149 feet, to the Top of the World Restaurant, can be scary! Once you’re up there, the views are AMAZING! This rotating restaurant will allow you to catch a 360 degree view of Las Vegas and its surroundings. BEFORE you eat (unless you are ok with your stomach contents spilling on unsuspecting “victims”), take a ride on X Scream, a GIANT teeter totter that rolls you out to the end of a track to dangle over the side, or on Insanity, a thrill ride that dangles you over the side of the Stratosphere and ALSO spins you, while tilting your “seat”, so that you are looking STRAIGHT DOWN! I’m positive that last sentence was a run-on, but I was so nervous just thinking about these things, I had to hurry and get through it!

Mon Ami Gabi
Mon Ami Gabi is a classic French bistro with great food and an even better ambiance! Sit on the patio overlooking the Strip and people watch…and then people watch some more! Vegas Daze guru, Shanna, loves to partake in this “activity” and insists that it is one of the best things to do in Las Vegas. I agree! Make sure to try their whipped cauliflower while you’re there J
